BCI Chorister Input Helps Plot the Future

This spring, over 650 BCI choristers participated in a survey about the BCI experience. The responses were generous and enlightening and the input is helping us to focus our planning and recruitment for the future. While COVID-19 has put a fermata on singing in person, we will be ready with traditional favorite programs and some new concepts when the scientific community advises we can move ahead.

We were thrilled with the overall levels of satisfaction with our programs. 94% of choristers agreed that BCI is worth the investment; 95% said it’s an experience they can’t get elsewhere, and 98% said they have fun when they are with us.

When asked how they feel when they sing with BCI, the sense of energy, joy, uplift, and inspiration were the most common answers. One singer said, “I am transcending my daily life,” while another stated, “I feel like I’m at a fantasy camp for choral musicians.”

Responding to a question to describe their favorite thing about BCI to a friend, singers talked about the fact that it is a one-of-a-kind experience, the immersive nature of our programs with high level conductors and artists, the opportunity to sing big choral works with an orchestra, and the opportunity to meet and connect with like-minded people. One chorister summed it up as, “an invigorating musical experience with high-quality conductors and the opportunity to develop long lasting friendships with other singers worldwide.”

In addition to feedback about our traditional week-long events, we also tested opinions about some new concepts. About two-thirds of current participants expressed interest in attending long-weekend choral workshops and a potential winter session in a warm location. As we adapt to the COVID situation, look for these programs in the future. Our thanks to everyone who responded for your helpful input and opinions.
